“The ‘Dark Web’ accounts for about 86 per cent of the actual internet,” Cypfer CEO Daniel Tobok told Global News on November 28, 2017.

“The biggest differences between the ‘Dark Web’ and the rest of the internet is that first, it doesn’t have a search engine, like Google or Yahoo! Second, because it doesn’t have a search engine, websites and email don’t get archived,” said Tobok.

When there is no metadata, data about the data, websites and email communication are rendered unsearchable and unarchivable.

“Because of this anonymity, the Dark Web is mostly used by cybercriminals and organized crime,” said Tobok.

“And this anonymity makes searching for communication from and about cybercriminals and terrorist groups extremely difficult to obtain, in order to prosecute criminals,” said Tobok.

With regular email and text messages, there are ways to track the communication including the IP address and other metadata. But not so with the Dark Web that use relay servers which get wiped every week or so.

There have been movements to try to archive parts of the Dark Web, to make it searchable but they have not been very successful because that would defeat the purpose of it. Essentially, the Dark Web is for anynymous communcation.
